Patty Wilson

BIO patty Author Patty A. Wilson lives in Central Pennsylvania where she has written about the paranormal for nearly twenty years. Her books include, Haunted Pennsylvania, The Pennsylvania Ghost Guides Vol. 1&2, Boos & Brews...Haunted Taverns, Inns, and Hotels of Pennsylvania (with Scott Crownover), Where Dead Men Walk, Haunted Pennsylvania (with Mark Nesbitt), The Big Book of Pennsylvania Ghost Stories (with Mark Nesbitt), the Pennsylvania Frontier Family Series, Book 1, Onward Into a Dangerous Land, Haunted West Virginia, Haunted North Carolina, Totally Bizarre Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania UFO Stories and will be releasing more books this year. Ms. Wilson has written for publications such as FATE Magazine, Mysteries Magazine, Countryside, The Pennsylvania Game News and the American Agriculturalist. Ms. Wilson has taught at Rhine Research Center in Durham, North Carolina, Lily Dale Assembly, N.Y., and at various colleges and schools. She's appeared on Mysterious Journeys Salem and Mysterious Journeys Eastern State Penitentiary on Travel Channel, and was instrumental in the first two episodes of Ghost Hunters. Ms. Wilson is a popular lecturer and speaker throughout the region.

Scotts Bio Scott Crownover-- Scott is a former U.S. Army Officer and Life Science major at Penn State. Scott relies on the various pieces of scientific equipment to give indications of a haunting. He co-authored “Boos & Brews” and “Ghosts in the Museum” with Patty Wilson. Scott co-founded the Ghost Research Foundation, which was the first field research group to teach at the Rhine Research Center in Durham, N.C. and Lily Dale Assembly in New York. Scott has pioneered a new technique in digital infrared photography that has yielded promising results. He is also working on a new system to hear and see EVP in real-time. He also worked with Patty and the Ghost Research Foundation on a long-term project at the Capitol in Raleigh, N.C. with the support of the Governor. Scott was featured on “Mysterious Journeys” on the Travel Channel in the Ghosts of Gettysburg episode using his technique for capturing entities in the daylight with digital infrared photography. Scott was featured on A&E Biography’s “My Ghost Story”, in early 2011.

Charlies Bio Charley Helsel ia a businessman who completed Management courses at Penn State University. He is a member of Various organizations and is respected in his local business community. Charley has been a Paranormal Researcher whith the Ghost Research Foundation (GRF) where he has brought both his talents as a paranormal investigator and a Sensitive to work for the GRF for the past ten years. Charley has been on a team that investigated the North Carolina State Capitol building and has asisted on several demonic cases. Charley is also a single parent of a four legged son named Sam.

JimsBIo Carolyn and I got involved in this, because.... Carolyn, who is from Blair county and whose daughter lives in Adams County, saw articles about Patty in local newspapers from those counties. She bugged me to go talk to my own editor (Jamie Greathead of The Fulton County News) and see if he would run a local interest article on Patty who lived in Fulton County. Jamie said "OK," so we went up to the Wilson farm and did an interview. And then Carolyn went back to get a book autographed, and Patty told her she was welcome to come to a meeting at the Jean Bonet Tavern. I went along, just to make it a "family outing," but afterward became intrigued by it, myself and began going to events whether or not Carolyn was free to come along. It was all Carolyn's fault, and I never had any intention of doing it, myself!

PD BIO Dan & I got involved with GRF when on a bike trip we ended up at the Jean Bennet. I had read all of Patty Wilson's books asked if we could tour the upstairs. The hostess said if we wanted to wait on the deck she would have a surprise for us in about an hour. The surprise was Patty Wilson, she told us a few historical facts and invited us into the group. What we bring to the group is a little bit of fun, what they got was two “"blocks"” Dan & I don't feel anything, although I do seem to sense things a little more now, thanks to Patty Wilson. The group also got the biggest Chicken they ever could imagine, ask any group member and they will tell you “don't stand in Patty's line of exit”. As for Dan they got a level headed hard working man that would do anything for them, during investigations you usually find him sacked out on the floor somewhere. Dan & I got a couple of good Evp’s and pictures. We learn more and more. I am getting a little better, I can actually go to the bathroom in certain places by myself now....

By now most people know that EVP means Electronic Voice Phonemena. Over the years we have experienced many different kinds. Some rules to follow:Never try to get EVP in an area filled with chatter. How can you distinguish a ghost from a real person? Try to keep control of the situation; announce everyone name in the area when the EVP starts, this gives you a baseline for the voice that might be picked up. We recommend using a program so that you can determine if the voice is that of one of your group. Of all the types of material captured by ghost hunters, perhaps the most controversial is that of electronic voice phenomena. How can you be truly sure that what you get is a ghost and not other people talking, or even radio waves that you are somehow picking up? The watchword with EVP is caution. You must have quiet in order to capture EVP. A stray voice amid a jumble of noise is worthless to the serious investigator. Quiet can be your biggest challenge. We are often invited to sites where there is a lot of noise. At times I will just throw my hands up in despair and say, Well not be able to look for EVPs here. Restaurants and bars will let you in to work, but they wont turn off the jukebox or that dreaded karaoke machine. Now you are faced with isolating voices in another part of the building away from the active, people-inhabited areas. Here are a few pointers on that: 1) Control the amount of conversation on your 2-way radios and among investigators. Limit comments as much as possible. 2) Try asking questions and seeking information. If you have asked a question, and a voice answers you in context, then you have a fair chance to consider it a good EVP. 3) Dont look for voices among tape hiss. This is particularly important when using a digital recorder. There are sites on the Internet where demonic growls are featured. They are nothing other than electronic interference. Be familiar with your equipment and dont look too hard. 4) Try using a voice print program. There are some inexpensive ones on the Internet and they can help you to isolate voices so that you can be sure that great EVP is not another investigator making a comment that they dont remember later on. We all do that. 5) The best tip is quiet. Try to find places to work where you have at least some control of the noise level in the environment. 6) The classical way of collecting EVP is to use white noise (static on a TV or radio tuned between frequencies) to help pull in the entities voices. You may want to play with that form, but be careful to disconnect the TV from the internal antenna or to have it done for you. This method has the added advantage of being done in your own home. Using this method, it is believed that the ghosts come to you. 7) Be vigilant. Some of the best EVP that I have ever heard came from people who just seemed to be in the right place at the right time. A young woman was doing genealogy notes on tape in local cemeteries. She was reading off the birth and deaths of various family members when she came to her grandfather. She had never known him because he had died when she was quite young, but she had been taught to love him by her grandmother. The young woman paused, tape still running, to tell her grandfather that she and her grandmother still loved him very much. To her surprise, a male voice said Shut up! on her tape at that point. The young woman knew that she was alone in an isolated cemetery in the country, and there was no way anything could have interfered on her tape. She also made out the same male voice two other places on the tape. She asked her father, the dead grandfathers son, to listen to the tape without explaining why. Her father was absolutely shocked. He insisted that it was his fathers voice on that tape. After making sure that she had used a new tape and visiting the site I do believe that this young woman captured her dead grandfathers voice. I have heard it for myself and it was quite clear. Shut up! Other people just seem to keep their tapes with them all of the time and have gone to cemeteries to place flowers or hold the hand of a friend who is grieving and have captured ghostly voices. Never under estimate persistence and vigilance as ways to help capture ghostly voices.

ThunderBirds

Author and folklorist Robert R. Lyman Sr. has chronicled many of the unusual happenings of the upper part of Pennsylvania known as the Black Forrest. In one of his volumes he relates several stories of Thunderbirds. His stories come from journals, eye-witness accounts and even old newspapers. Consider the following items when considering the “mythical” thunderbird.1892Fred Murray of Tioga County claimed to have seen a flock of giant birds in Cameron County near Dent’s Run. He described them as looking like buzzards only much larger. He estimated the wing span at 16ft or more. Murray’s account made the local newspaper and attracted the interest of an ornithologist from Pittsburgh. The ornithologist found Murray at his lumber camp in the Black Forrest and tried to observe the birds. The account is unclear as to if the man saw any such birds or not. However, it stated that he likened them to similar birds that had been seen in remote parts of Kentucky and West Virginia.1898 In Centreville, Crawford County a farmer noticed something pecking at a dead cow at the far end of his farm. He set a trap and the next day he captured a huge bird, “the likes of which he had never seen.” He took it home in a cage and kept it alive for some time. Among those who testified to having seen the bird was a Superintendent of the Potter County School System named A.P. Akeley He described the bird as gray with a short neck and legs. It was hard to judge the height because it was stooped in the cage. He estimated it was at least 4 ft. tall but could have been as much as 6 feet tall if fully extended. The farmer did some research and thought he had himself an Andean Condor, but Mr. Akeley disputed that claim. First of all, the bird was not black and there was no large white ruff on the lower part of it’s neck. Furthermore, the Andean Condor has bare skin at the top of it’s neck, but this bird did not. The California Condor was ruled out for the same reason. No one ever identified the bird, and what became of it is unclear.1900Folks in Hammersley Fork took notice when two prospectors in Tombstone Arizona shot and carried back to town a thunderbird. The story, along with a photograph showing six men standing under the bird with outstretched arms touching, appeared in the daily paper. This bird looked like ones known to have been in the Black Forrest. (It would be an amazing find if anyone could locate that old Tombstone Paper or the one in Hammersley Fork where the photograph and story were reproduced.)1910 Elvira Coats was born in Ellisburg, named for her paternal grandfather who founded the town, in Genesee Township. She lived in the Black Forrest when there were still many Indians in the area. She was a caring, giving woman who took care of neighbors. In 1910 Calvin Carpenter was bedridden with a prolonged illness. To pass the hours while she cared for the man, Elvira often told him stories of her childhood in the Black Forrest. One day she began talking about the birds that her old Indian friends had called Thunderbirds. She said that the birds were much larger than vultures and that when they flew they appeared “enormous” because of their great wingspan. The birds were not known to hurt people and, though she saw them several times, she had no fear of them. They were just one anecdotal story among others of her pioneer childhood. This story inspired Carpenter to look closer into the old legend and he found other contemporaries of Elvira’s named Lewis Sheldon and Harry Hurd. Lewis insisted that he had seen them fly in flocks of 5 or 6 birds. He also described them as looking like buzzards. Harry corroborated the stories. 1922 A Mr. Cranmer of Hammersley Fork saw a Thunderbird. He wrote of his sighting for FATE Magazine in 1963. “I was standing by my gate at dusk when one flew over, heading north. It passed a pine tree with branches spreading 50 feet, so I could estimate its wingspread fairly accurately. It was 35 feet. I was alone at the time and never mentioned the incident for 35 years. “On 27 March 1957, a young man rushed in and said: ’Something big is in the sky.’ I went outside and saw a huge bird flying lazily 500 feet up. Its wing motion reminded me of a blue heron, but the bird was lighter and grayer in color. I called the American Legion in Renovo, and inquired if anyone had seen a big bird half an hour before. A man who had just come in said it had flown over Westport, come down Fish Dam Run, and then up Two-Mile Run. he said its wingspread was 25 to 30 feet.” In his account he went on to relate that a similar bird was seen a couple weeks later by several witnesses on different occasions. 1940 A.P. Akeley (refer to the 1898 entry) reported seeing a large bird outside of Coudersport. It was brownish with short neck and legs. It was like a very large vulture, and he estimated it to be between 3-4 feet tall. It took off when he was about 150 feet away. He estimated the wingspan as being 25 feet. He knew this because when it took off its wings touched from one side of the road to the other. He went back and measured the area. The road was approximately 25 feet across. The bird seemed to fly through dense timber with no trouble. He believed that it was a young bird color. Mr. Akeley speculated that perhaps the immature birds of this species were brownish as camouflage but that they turned gray when they matured.1969 Albert Schoonover and two other road workers watched a thunderbird fly across Bush lake, Clinton County. While they were observing it, the bird made the far side of the lake and darted down. When it came back up, it had a fawn in it’s grasp. The fawn was struggling and obviously alive. It had to weigh at least 15 lbs. they estimated. Later that summer a Lock Haven couple at Robbins Run were camping when they saw such a bird. It was not their first sighting for they had camped in the area before. However, one day, while driving to camp, they had a startling experience. One of the large birds dive bombed in front of them, swooped down and picked up dead woodchuck and flew off. The couple described the bird as screaming like a child. They had noticed that the birds seem more active just before thunderstorms. 1973 Several people with homes along Pine Creek in the Tomb Run area saw the birds for the six years. They describe them as averaging 16 foot wingspans, with gray coloring and white wing tips. The birds half glided, half flapped as they fly over. Usually the birds appeared in pairs. Others have insisted that some of the birds reached wingspans of up to 35 feet. And the stories go on with accounts from the Lock Haven Express, Jersey Shore Newspapers and many others. The accounts come from as far west as the coast. Some of them are quite compelling.
One morning in November I was driving into Altoona and listening to Paul Harvey News & Commentary when I suddenly found myself scrambling for a pen. Mr. Harvey was talking about birds with 24 foot wing spans that had been seen in the skies above Anchorage Alaska by piper cub pilots and citizens on the ground alike. This ignited my interests in those mythical Thunderbirds that don’t seem so mythical anymore. This recent spate of sightings were first reported in the Anchorage Daily News. Reporters interviewed several dozen people in total who had claimed to see the birds. Everyone from old ladies to pilots gave the same story of large black birds gliding high in the sky. The birds were observed closely by at least one pilot. It does open the door to speculation about these birds once more. I’ll keep you posted if there is any further news from Alaska. Patty A. Wilson
